The School
Manson Street, Taumarunui

Situated in well-developed grounds our school was opened 2 February 1970 under the name of Golf Road School.  The school's name was changed to Tarrangower School in June 1971 as it was felt that the new name more accurately reflected the area of the town in which the school is located.

Our school has formal lawns at the front, in which is situated a carved and night-lit school sign. To the rear of the school are playing fields that are both free draining and spacious, a junior adventure playground, a senior adventure playground, netball courts, swimming pool and cricket practice nets.

We are currently in the process of completely covering the quadrangle, with Stage One commencing
during the Christmas holidays.

Our school buildings consist of the following:
  • 9 classrooms - 6 used as teaching units,
1 as breakfast club/ homework centre / wet day assembly area,
1 as a Te Reo/ Kapa Haka teaching area,
1 established as an ICT suite
(8 computers, fully networked, with time allocated to each teaching unit)
  • Resource Room
  • Reading Recovery / SARR Room
  • Library (well stacked with over 5000 titles)
  • Administration block (housing Staff Room, Administrators Office, Principals Office, Associate Principals Office, Photocopy Room, Sick Bay, Shower Room and Staff toilets)
  • Swimming pool and changing sheds
  • Dental Clinic

With a current role of 128 our staffing is made up as follows:

  • 6 MOE funded full time teachers (Teaching Principal, Associate Principal and four Teaching Staff)
  • School Administrator
  • Teacher Aide
  • Teacher Aide Arts & Crafts
  • 3 part-time Special Needs Teacher Aides
  • Caretaker / Cleaner / Groundsman
  • Dental Nurse
  • Reading Recovery/SARR/ICT Teacher (Discretionary staffing)

The school roll ranges from between 120 (at the beginning of the school year) and 140 (at the end of the school year).  The school roll annual turnover is approximately 30% (which excludes New Entrants and Year 8 children who leave at the end of the year), this reflects the transient population.

The children are drawn from a wide cross section of the Taumarunui community.
Class sizes average 18 students per class, although this can vary throughout the year.
While the majority of children live in the Taumarunui town area, the Okahukura area is rural and includes the Manu Ariki Marae.

The community expects the children to be able to read, write, count and to be happy at school.
They expect the children to be involved in sport and other recreational activities including skiing and the use of the rivers and bush. Parents are happy for their children to be involved, and a good number take an active part in assisting with the programmes.
