Tarrangower Primary School
Situated in well-developed grounds our school was opened on the 2nd February 1970 under the name of Golf Road School. The school's name was changed to Tarrangower School in June 1971 as it was felt that the new name more accurately reflected the area of the town in which the school is located.
Our school has formal lawns at the front, in which is situated a carved and night-lit school sign. To the rear of the school are playing fields that are both free draining and spacious, a junior adventure playground, a senior adventure playground, and netball courts. We have a completely covered quadrangle and stage area with a large shade structure.
The school roll averages around 42 students with tamariki from a wide cross-section of the Taumarunui urban community and surrounding rural area. We have two classes in our school with the senior room averaging 25 students in years 5-8 and the junior room averaging 16 students in years 0-4 although this may vary during the year.
Outside agencies that the school can call on include: REAP (Rural Education Activities Programme) Primary Liaison Officer, Speech Therapist, Public Health Nurses, Skylight Trust (counselling), Social Workers in Schools, Special Education Officers, Police Youth and Education Officers, Dental Therapists and other teachers in the district.
Situated in the Heart of the King Country, and in the centre of the Ruapehu District, Taumarunui is bordered by the Whanganui River, the Ongarue River and Mounts Ruapehu, Ngauruhoe and Tongariro. With easy access to sports such as skiing, trout fishing, canoeing/kayaking, and white water rafting, and the surrounding terrain lending itself to both road and mountain biking, makes Taumarunui a great place for multi-sport activities.
Within the Ruapehu District there is also a wide range of other sporting and cultural facilities available. Sports facilities include netball, rugby, soccer, indoor/outdoor bowls, squash, tennis, walking group, swimming (a heated community pool situated at the High School and outdoor pools situated in town), Polo Crosse, and an 18-hole golf course. Cultural facilities include the PATI (Performing Arts Taumarunui Inc.), Art Society, Floral Arts Society and the Community Arts Council and Arts Centre. There are also a number of Marae within the district and all of the mainline churches are established in the town.
